One of the Medics at Lincoln called me and said she talked to the crew transporting him and this is the scoop as of 10:30pm,
2nd degree burns on 80% of his body. They thought he would stay at Hershey Med but if he does need to be moved it will be to Lehigh. Will let ya know if I hear any more. |

A terrible fire that raged for what seemed like an eternity. Thank God for
the guy who finally pulled Steve out.
My prayers are with Steve.

This just posted on the Grove Board.
Steve is in the Lehigh Valley Burn Center now. He's burned pretty bad around his ankles, not 80% of his body. He will be in surgery today.

SO VERY GLAD to hear that what I was told was wrong. I agree where was the amb. crew, they were called several times on the radio and they never moved from the
amb. That was very poorly handled from what we could see and hear. Hope Steve has a speedy recovery, he is in our thoughts and prayers.

Does anyone have Steve's address that cards can be sent to? Our hearts go out to Steve and his crew/family from the #10 crew.. It's a shame it took the ambulance crew forever to tend to him... |

heard over my headset it wasn't the regular ambulance crew. However, that is NO excuse, that man's life was in extreme danger. Reminded me when Howie
Locke and Frankie Herr both had their fires. Extremely dangerous. Hope something can and WILL be done to protect our drivers.

New Info I was misinformed this morning a bit. I just got off the phone with Steve. He's a little doped up, but still his typical self.
He said when he came to a stop, the Fireman came running up and couldn't pull the pin. It was stuck and Steve was yelling for help. That's when the guy reached in and was trying to help Steve from the right side. He said he was in major pain during the ambulance ride from the track to Hershey Med. He has 3rd degree burns on his right leg from the thigh down to his calf and a another smaller burn on his left leg. Tomorrow he will get Skin Graphs and then they will not be looked at for 5 days to make sure they take and there is no infection. You are correct it was not our regular ambulance crew, but I know one of the 2 people on the infield ambulance has worked on the ambulance at the Grove on
Friday nights quite a few times in the past couple of years and should have known better.
My question is this, If they had responded to Steve right away rather than letting him lay on the track for 6 minutes would it have made a diff. in how badly he ended up being hurt? (not saying it did make a diff. just asking) |

From pennlive.com today:
STEVE WILBUR RECUPERATING FROM INJURIES BY JERRY REIGLE Super Sportsman driver Steve Wilbur suffered second and third degree burns to both lower legs following a qualifying incident Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway. Wilbur of Mechanicsburg, Pa., said Sunday evening that physicians at the Lehigh Valley Burn Center in Allentown, Pa., plan to perform skin graft surgery Monday for the second and third degree burns he sustained in the single-car incident. "From what I understand, a fly wheel sheered off the fuel line," Wilbur said. "Once I got the car stopped, the helmet restraint got caught and I couldn’t get it unhooked." The driver’s compartment was engulfed in flames and the track safety crew worked at extricating Wilbur from his No. 59 Super Sportsman vehicle. "I appreciate all the hard effort they did," Wilbur said. "It’s a miracle that they got in there and helped me get out. They did their best and should be commended." Once freed from the car, Wilbur laid on the track surface as medics responded to his injuries. "I knew my legs were burnt pretty bad," Wilbur added. "My gloves were burnt but for some reason, my hands didn’t get burnt. Fortunately, I had a new suit." Wilbur was transported to the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. After triage, physicians decided to send him to the Lehigh Valley Burn Center via land transportation. "The worst part of the whole deal was the trip from the track to Hershey," Wilbur said. "All the more they could do was put water on the burns, but they gave me some medication before the trip to Allentown. I was feeling pretty good for that ride. I think I could have done it on my own on a bicycle." Wilbur is expected to remain in the Lehigh Valley Burn Center for a week. He will undergo an extensive rehabilitation regimen upon his arrival home. Wilbur said the earliest he’ll be back racing is July. "I am just fortunate, because it could have been a lot worse," Wilbur said. "It was bad, but I’m very luck to only have the burns on my lower legs." Cards-only can be sent to Wilbur at the Lehigh Valley Burn Center, 1210 South Cedar Crest Blvd., Suite 3000, Room 35, Allentown, Pa. 18103. Also, cards and flowers can be sent to Wilbur at 20 Sinclair Road, Mechanicsburg, Pa., 17055. Your Signature ...
